25 AMAZING Finger Foods for Babies and Toddlers – Baby Led Feeding

If you are looking for delicious baby finger foods then this is the page for you. These were the top 25 finger foods for toddlers and babies and they come from some of the best food bloggers in the world; My Fussy Eater, Healthy Little Foodies, My Kids Lick the Bowl, Eats Amazing as well as many more. As always, I’ve chosen only low salt and refined sugar-free recipe that I have also tried at home too.

When can I start finger foods?

You MUST be able to squash a food between your finger and thumb to ensure it is 100% safe for your baby.

Aileen Cox Blundell

You can start your baby on finger food from 6 months and you can actually totally skip the mushing, pureeing, and head straight onto ‘big people’ food. So, roast those veggies until they are lovely and soft, steam broccoli, slow cook meat until really tender. I like to cut all of my veggies into spears. It makes the food super easy to handle.

How to start finger foods?

This is the easiest part. Once you have soft food (that you can squash between your finger and thumb), just put a spear or two in front of your baby and let them get to work … all by themselves. When I started I didn’t even use a plate, I just plonked the food down onto the high chair tray. Those plates just end up on the floor anyway at the start.

It might take a few goes (and a lot of mess), but you will soon see your baby get the hang of it. Once they start throwing food or seeming disinterested you know they are done.

How to stop the mess of baby-led weaning?

Get a wipeable tablecloth and put it under your baby’s highchair. The TidyTot is also an AMAZING invention and stops all mess and well, well, well worth the money. Once food falls onto a clean surface you can pick it back up and place it back onto your baby’s high chair tray.

Don’t let your baby wear a white top! I’ve been there and stains NEVER come out! Oscars favorite way to eat messy sauces when topless, wearing his TidyTot . Yes I know, but it completely saved his clothes and we had zero mess.

If you absolutely detest mess, opt for foods like these

Remember! Your babies tummy is the size of their fist AND they also get 75% of all their nutrition from their milk, until they are 12 months.

Mexican Quinoa Bites

This recipe is a yummy variation of baby led weaning tuna quinoa bites (which you can find here). Quinoa (pronounced keen-wah) is so amazing for all the family. It is a complete protein meaning that it contains all nine essential amino acids which most other grains lack. It is high in Vitamins B & E and is also a great source of fibre. And, if that wasn’t enough it is also a great source of calcium, magnesium and manganese. Quinoa is the least allergenic of all grains so if your little one is intolerant to grains this is a great alternative finger food recipe.
