Sony to acquire EMI music publishing for nearly $2 billion

Japanese entertainment giant Sony plans to purchase 60% of music publishing firm and record label EMI for about U.S. $2 billion, reports Bloomberg.

Why it matters: Sony already owns about 40% equity interest in EMI, and this transaction would bolster Sony’s current position as the world’s largest music publisher — EMI reportedly has a catalog of 2.1 million songs — and further expand its content and services.

Music Victoria CEO Patrick Donovan wants Richard Branson to put bands on planes

Music Victoria CEO Patrick Donovan wants Richard Branson to put bands on planes

Music Victoria chief executive Patrick Donovan has some novel ideas on how to make air travel more entertaining. He answers our Traveller Q&A.

First, business or economy?

I wouldn’t knock first or business, but I’m happy in economy, which is often very social. On flights from Melbourne to Los Angeles and Melbourne to Buenos Aires, it can often be like a nightclub up the back of the plane. It’s a great place to meet people.

Favourite travel destination?

New Orleans. It is an incredible melting pot of disparate cultures – French, Cajun, Latin American – that permeate the music, art and food. There’s a laconic groove and down-to-earthness that flows through the Mississippi and its people.

Favourite airport?

Austin, Texas. Bands play there regularly, musicians make the speaker announcements, and there’s a giant guitar on the luggage carousel. You have no doubt when you arrive that you are in a music city. Music Victoria put on bands at Melbourne Airport a few years ago and we would like to do that again one day. Visit Victoria now regards live music as one of the state’s most unique assets, so a music focus at the airport is a great way to illustrate that and greet visitors.

If I ran my own airline I would…

Put bands on planes. If you’re reading this, Richard Branson, give us a call. We’d be thrilled to set it up. The bands could play flying themes: Spirit in the Sky, Ghost Riders in the Sky… I’m sure Angus and Julia Stone (Big Jet Plane) would be up for it.

Where would you go with an unlimited travel budget?

Regional Victoria. Music Victoria ran three Victorian Music Crawls for the Victorian government recently, where we mimicked a regional tour and programmed local talent. Venues ranged from Queenscliff’s The Blues Train to Ocean Grove’s Piping Hot Chicken and Burger Grill, a river boat on the Murray River and an inactive volcano at Tower Hill, where Archie Roach played.

Worst place you’ve been lost?

Stuck in no man’s land on the border of Peru and Bolivia after the border security had closed. I had a couple of llamas to keep me company.

Most memorable overseas dining?

On the Isle of Pines, in the archipelago of New Caledonia, we walked through a dense forest to a deserted beach, where we were served fresh lobster and cold beer. Calf’s head soup in St Petersburg was certainly memorable, but not great.

In the suitcase?

Rocco Cuban-heeled boots, thongs, leather jacket, Melbourne band T-Shirts, iPod, laptop and Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro headphones, which give the effect of sounding like you are in a studio with the band. I have more room in my baggage now than in the 1990s when half my case would be full of tapes and a Walkman.

First thing you do in a new city?

Look up the gig guide and go to listen to local music. It’s a great way to get a feel for the city and meet locals.

How do you make the most of a spare afternoon in a strange city?

Put on some music from the area on the headphones and go for a long walk. Makes me feel like I’m in a film clip. Memorable experiences include Miles Davis’ haunting Sketches of Spain in Andalucía and Van Morrison’s cathartic Astral Weeks in Belfast.

Most like to travel with and why?

My wife Sally is a great travel partner. We both travelled solo a lot before we met. We have a knack for finding characters and adventures while still being independent.

Cure for jet lag?

Go straight out to a gig. The energy keeps you awake until midnight, and after a litre of water and eight hours sleep, you’re ready to work the next morning.

Other travel tips?

Seek out the local music press to see what’s on.

Anywhere you’d recommend for a special occasion?

Bambu Indah resort in Ubud. It has antique Javanese bridal huts perched on the edge of a cliff.

Best overseas purchase?

I’m pretty happy with my Elvis Presley Tiger bomber jacket that I bought  Memphis recently.

Best travel tale?

I was at a friend’s nephew’s wedding on the outskirts of Ho Chi Minh City, where no expenses were spared. After chewing on pigeon feet and downing some Vietnamese rice wine moonshine, I plucked up enough Dutch courage to bang out a crowd pleaser: Steve Miller Band’s Rock’N Me, which seemed to go down OK.

Best thing about travelling?

Getting out of your comfort zone, meeting people and learning about different ways of approaching situations.

Top travel gripe?

Early checkouts in hotel rooms. And having to go home at the end of a trip.

► Sleep Music:

Free Binaural Beat has some of the web’s most effective deep sleep music. Our audios relax the mind and body, and are suitable for anyone who needs relaxing, soothing, and peaceful music to fight insomnia or help them fall asleep. The delta binaural brainwave frequencies work as a sot of sleep hypnosis gently easing you into that relaxing world of healing sleep.

Whole brain integration is when both the right and left hemispheres of the brain are working together and communicating in sync. Many people refer to themselves as “right brained” or “left brained”

In reality, we all use both our left and right brains, but it is possible that our characteristics can be dominant to one hemisphere.

Brainwave entrainment such as binaural beats and isochronic tones are effective for many reasons. One of those reasons is whole brain integration. The brainwave entrainment frequencies engage both hemispheres of the brain and get them to work together. This whole brain integration is much more effective for creating new neuro pathways in the brain and changing limiting beliefs.

Another major benefit of brainwave entrainment is the ability to bring the brain to a desired vibration. While in deep meditation the brain predominately vibrates and theta and delta frequencies.

This audio uses both binaural beats and isochronic tones set to both theta and delta frequencies to assist in full brain integration and deep meditative states.
