Melania Trump Returns to White House in ‘High Spirits’ After Kidney Procedure

Melania Trump Returns to White House in ‘High Spirits’ After Kidney Procedure

WASHINGTON — The White House said Saturday morning that the first lady, Melania Trump, had returned home after spending almost five days at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center recovering from a procedure for a kidney condition.

In a statement, Mrs. Trump’s communications director, Stephanie Grisham, said the first lady was “resting comfortably and remains in high spirits.”

The president, who visited the military hospital three times this past week, wrote on Twitter: “Great to have our incredible First Lady back home in the White House. Melania is feeling and doing really well. Thank you for all of your prayers and best wishes!”

After a procedure on Monday, the White House said Mrs. Trump would probably remain at Walter Reed “for the duration of the week.” The next day, President Trump said the recovery would be “two or three days.” But on Friday, as that time frame expired, the West Wing and Mrs. Trump’s office would not comment on the first lady’s whereabouts, leading to speculation about the seriousness of her condition.

Medical experts have puzzled over why Mrs. Trump would have remained in the hospital for almost a week when the recovery for the kind of procedure she underwent — an embolization that cuts off the blood supply to the kidney — is typically a day.

The White House has still not explained what led Mrs. Trump to seek treatment, or whether its reference to her “benign kidney condition” meant she had a tumor.

On Saturday, as Mrs. Trump returned to the White House, her husband had no public events on his schedule.

“She is resting comfortably and remains in high spirits,” the first lady’s communications director Stephanie Grisham said in a statement.

Trump underwent a medical procedure on Monday for what her office said was a “benign” kidney condition. The White House has declined to offer additional details about the specifics of the condition.

Grisham also expressed thanks for the thousands of calls and emails she said the first lady’s office received during Trump’s stay in the hospital.

In a statement, the White House said that “The First Lady returned home to the White House this morning. She is resting comfortably and remains in high spirits.”

Earlier this week, Melania Trump went under kidney surgery for a condition the White House characterized as benign. The first lady tweeted on Wednesday that she was in good health, as she recovered at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda.

“Our office has received thousands of calls and emails wishing Mrs. Trump well, and we thank everyone who has taken the time to reach out,” the White House said on Saturday.

Melania Trump says she feels “great” after a kidney procedure and expects to return to the White House before long. Her husband is visiting her in the hospital for the third straight day.

The first lady’s comments on Twitter on Wednesday were her first since she was hospitalized for an embolization on Monday. She tweeted “a sincere thank you to Walter Reed Medical Unit” and to her well-wishers. Mrs. Trump added, “I am feeling great & look forward to getting back home.”

President Donald Trump is visiting his 48-year-old wife for the third day in a row. The 72-year-old president joked during a visit to the Capitol on Wednesday that the first lady should be the one visiting him in the hospital, not the other way around.
