Inter go for Gundogan

Inter go for Gundogan

Inter will ask Manchester City for midfielder Ilkay Gundogan if they qualify for the Champions League, according to the Corriere dello Sport.

The newspaper names the 27-year-old German international of Turkish descent as the prime target over the summer.

It all depends on the Nerazzurri finishing in the top four, which can only be achieved if they beat Lazio in the final round of the season this Sunday.

This would require a huge investment, but it’s reported the club’s owners – Suning Group – would splash out for Gundogan in order to build Luciano Spalletti’s project.

Manchester City bought Gundogan for €27m only two years ago and this season he has contributed six goals and seven assists in 49 competitive games.

Mihajlovic: 'Inter played dirty'

Mihajlovic: 'Inter played dirty'

Lazio director Igli Tare implied that Inter “played dirty” on Stefan de Vrij and “we saw how that ended up” with defeat to Sassuolo.

The Aquile have the opportunity to mathematically secure a place in the Champions League today if they beat Crotone.

It kicks off at 14.00 UK time (13.00 GMT), click here for the line-ups and Liveblog.

“Some tried to play dirty and we saw last night how that ended up,” director of sport Tare told Mediaset Premium.

He was asked if he was referring to the news that De Vrij has already signed for Inter, as his contract with Lazio expires on June 30.

“Giving news like that 10 days from the end of the season, a week before a head-to-head, is avoidable. It could’ve been done at the end of the season or even weeks ago.

“I don’t know if it was the club, an agent or the papers, but it is something I would not have done. This lad gave us so much over the years and deserves to leave with respect and the applause of the fans.

“He won a great deal over four years and deserves better. We have never doubted his professionalism or his attitude.

“This is the final match point and we absolutely want to win this game to cap off a fantastic season.

“We need concentration and a great victory, as the team deserves it.”

Spalletti: 'Inter players distraught'

Spalletti: 'Inter players distraught'

Luciano Spalletti confessed Inter players were “distraught” after losing to Sassuolo and effectively ruining their top four ambitions.

The Nerazzurri’s hopes of Champions League football lie in tatters after a shock 2-1 home defeat to Sassuolo, meaning if Lazio beat Crotone tomorrow, they’ll be mathematically sure of fourth and fifth place.

“We didn’t do well covering Domenico Berardi and their wingers were very wide, so we were always caught half-way and could not get back to recover fast enough,” the Coach told Mediaset Premium.

“We lost a lot of energy that way chasing them down. With time, we found a better shape tactically, but after the second goal the team lost its balance and chaotically tried to get back into the game.

“The result is also down to our own mistakes, because we did get the balls into the box. Sassuolo had the right approach and we compliment them for winning a big game for their prestige. They probably felt comfortable after securing their Serie A safety and tended to lie on the ground a few minutes longer than necessary, but if they let them do it…

“It wasn’t down to just one player. After going behind, we had plenty of time to recover and calmly get it back on track. With our possession we would’ve squeezed Sassuolo and tired them out, but instead we kept losing the ball in midfield and were disorganised.

“At times we were too chaotic and rushed, but we had the time and the balls did get into the box. Andrea Consigli made two or three fantastic saves.”

If Inter do miss out on the Champions League, how would Spalletti describe their season?

“Less well than I would’ve described it yesterday, because this is a heavy defeat. The lads were just distraught in the locker room, as they cared so much.”

Icardi: 'If it's best for Inter that I go…'

Icardi: 'If it's best for Inter that I go…'

Mauro Icardi admits his Inter future is up in the air. “If it’s good for the team that I stay, then I’ll stay, otherwise I will leave.”

The striker is their most valuable player at €120m and their Financial Fair Play status could be at risk.

This evening’s 2-1 home defeat to Sassuolo left their chances of qualifying for the Champions League in tatters.

“I repeat every year, I will speak to the club. If it’s good for the team that I stay, then I’ll stay, otherwise I will leave,” Icardi told Sky Sport Italia and Mediaset Premium.

“I always do what is best for the club and the team. When the season ends, we’ll talk to the club and see what is best for them.

“It’s disappointing, because we wanted to win tonight, but Sassuolo had a great game and Andrea Consigli enjoyed the best performance of his career.

“We started the season in extraordinary fashion, then had a dip, but the only thing I can say is that I’m proud of what we’ve done.

“The objective was the Champions League and not being in it means we’ve missed the target we set at the start of the campaign. We always start with that as a target and we’ve never managed it.

“Hopefully, tomorrow Crotone will give us a chance to still fight it out with Lazio next week.”
