Palo Santo Marron is a 12% abv brown ale aged in special Palo Santo wooden tanks. This particular beer was bottled 11 February 2008 and thus was more than two years old when we tasted it.
The beer poured thick as oil into the glass, with an opaque dark brown color and a fine brown head that quickly decayed. A rich roasted aroma with syrupy sweetness, toffee, licorice, vanilla and some funky wood notes (the Palo Santo). The mouthfeel was smooth and creamy. The taste was big; wood, roasted malts, caramel, bitter hops – all well balanced. Really nice, with a bitter sweet finish (wood & caramel). But surprisingly short.
The aroma and initial mouthfeel was fantastic but the short finish makes me wonder if this beer has already peaked, the Palo Santo Marron should probably be enjoyed within a year of bottling.
