Passenger killed after car split in half

A YOUNG man has died after the vehicle he was in crashed into trees and split in two in southeast Queensland.

Police said initial investigations indicated the driver lost control of the car while travelling west on Maleny-Kenilworth Rd at Witta, northwest of Maleny, about 8.40pm before crashing into trees.

“A passenger in the vehicle, a 22-year-old local man, died at the scene,” police said.

Police said the driver had “just overtaken a number of cars and then left the roadway and impacted with a number of trees”.

“The car has subsequently split in two,” police said.

Officers described it as a “harrowing scene”.

“It’s not one we come across often”.

The 39-year-old Nambour driver was taken to Sunshine Coast University Hospital with possible spinal injuries.

Investigations are continuing.
