Julia Roberts starred in 1997’s Conspiracy Theory, but that could just as easily be the title of her first foray into episodic television.
Adapted from the critically acclaimed 2016 podcast created by Eli Horowitz and Micah Bloomberg, who serve as showrunners, Homecoming focuses on the titular initiative that helps soldiers transition back to civilian life. Roberts plays a case worker who begins to bond with a patient (Shots Fired‘s Stephan James) but realizes the Homecoming project isn’t as virtuous as she thought.
Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail was drawn to tell this story after listening to the podcast on a car trip with his wife, Emmy Rossum (Shameless). “That’s when it clicked for me that there’s a whole other dimension to this we could really tap into if we turned it into a [TV] series,” says Esmail, who exec-produces and directs all 10 of Homecoming‘s first-season episodes.
If anyone knows how to craft a paranoia thriller, it’s him.
Homecoming will debut this fall on Amazon.
